The Cincinnati footprint

The truth about the pile

Cincinnati's landfills aren't infinite-they're leveling up on space while we keep tossing stuff that could be refused, reused, or sorted right. Think of it like a game: every contaminated cart, tangled bag, or rogue battery is a boss fight you don't need-because your crew (that's you) can block trash before it lands in local soil.

Power up: the 5Rs

Tap a card-level up how you think about stuff. Kid-friendly, crew-approved.

Stop! Don't "Wish-Cycle".

"Wish-cycling" is tossing something in the bin and hoping it's recyclable. Wrong stuff doesn't magically transform-it can spark fires, gunk up machines, or trash a whole load so everything gets sent toward disposal.

Batteries = fire risk

Lithium batteries from old toys, earbuds, or vapes don’t belong in curbside bins. They can spark fires in trucks and facilities. Use proper battery drop-off-never the recycling cart.

Greasy boxes ruin batches

A greasy pizza box or a half-full soda bottle can contaminate a whole load-spoiling paper and sending good recyclables toward the landfill. Empty, scrape, and sort-when unsure, look it up.

Half-full drink containers and food residue are classic contamination culprits-empty first, scrape grease, and when you're unsure, look up your program instead of guessing.

Where it goes

The Cincinnati local loop

Three lanes-don't mix them up. Read the one-liner on each card first; details are for when you're ready.

Rumpke (Curbside)

If it’s a simple bottle or box, put it in the curb cart.

Your weekly pickup for the straightforward stuff: aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass jars, paper, and cardboard-clean, empty, and loose (not in bags).

When in doubt, check Rumpke’s latest Cincy guidelines-rules can change.

Cincinnati Reuse & Recycling Hub

If it has a cord, a battery, or is foam-take it to the Hub.

The hard stuff doesn’t belong in your curb cart: electronics, Styrofoam, paint, and other problem materials. The Hub helps keep these out of landfills-look it up and plan a drop-off near downtown Cincinnati.

Hours and accepted items change-confirm before you haul.

Store drop-off

If it’s stretchy plastic (bags), take it back to the store.

Plastic grocery bags, wraps, and bubble wrap tangle sorting machines at Rumpke-so they don’t go curbside. Many grocery stores have a front-of-store bin for clean, dry film plastic.

Bag your bags: keep them clean and bundled so staff can recycle them safely.
